About Us

Hamster HQ organisation was created in 2024 by Joshua and Deimante rescued a pair of Russian Dwarf hamsters from Pets at Home after they had been found in a cage on the streets of Blackpool, Lancashire. It turned out that they hadn’t rescued two males, but instead a male (Timmy) and female (Forest) hamster which they soon learnt after discovering a litter of five hamster pups a few weeks later!

As first time hamster owners, Josh and Dee had already discovered that hamsters shouldn’t be placed together, the cage they were informed to purchase from Pets at Home was too small, and the leaflet they received when rescuing the pair had minimal and contradicting information, plus the hamster exercise ball, toys, and food not being fit for their now seven hamsters… Things had to change if they were going to give their hamsters the best life possible!

Founders of Hamster HQ

It became clear that the information available on the internet was contradicting, with many large chain pet stores selling unsafe hamster cages, bedding, food, toys, and substrates. As you can imagine, as first time hamster owners being chucked in the deep end it became very difficult to find the correct information to offer the best and safest life for their hamsters.

Digging through hamster forums, sub Reddits, Facebook groups, and older web archives, the couple managed to piece together the correct care they should be providing. They also found that many are looking for the best help and input for their hamsters, many of which are first time owners, but are met with hostile and toxic sub communities who are quick to point fingers and blame without working with them to build the best environment which we all want to see.

After chasing down the best tanks and cages available throughout Lancashire for their hamsters, they also managed to find loving homes for three of their hamster pups with regular contact of their new owners, however, they were still left with a couple pups. After becoming attached, it was agreed that they would keep them both along with the adults to offer them the best life possible.

As of today, Josh and Dee have four hamsters scuttering through their habitats in their loving home, but the story could have ended up much worse! Searching the internet at some of the common unsafe hamster items (which are still available) such as cotton (fluffy bedding), small cages, hamster balls and hamster wheels, you’ll find so many unfortunate stories of hamsters being injured or killed by improper materials being sold to owners without their knowledge.

After finally getting their hamsters the setup and love they deserve, Josh and Dee set out on a mission to ensure that others are informed about the best hamster care and safety in an inclusive and safe environment to help prevent premature hamster deaths and to highlight the issues faced. Hamster HQ is here for everybody, whether you’re a first time hamster owner, looking for the latest advice, or want to share your tips and insights, we welcome everybody regardless of what point you’re at to work together and help address the mistreating of hamsters on a global scale.
